Key Benefits of Saltwater Pools

Wondering how a saltwater pool can improve your swimming pool experience?

Saltwater swimming pool systems are becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to traditionally chlorinated pools. With a saltwater system, you can avoid many of the less pleasant effects of the chlorine in your pool water: irritated eyes and skin, a strong chlorine smell and the cost of the chemicals.

The chlorine added to traditional pool water does keep your pool free from bacteria and algae, but saltwater swimming pool systems can do the same thing without the negative side effects.  A saltwater pool isn’t chlorine free, but is a less harsh form of chlorine. When using a saltwater system, the pool creates its own chlorine through electrolysis, where the saltwater passing through the chlorine generator is converted to chlorine. Your pool is still protected from bacteria and algae, but you don’t have to add chlorine to your water to do so.

Below are a few of the benefits of a saltwater chlorinating system:

Skin and eyes are less irritated by saltwater pools

Despite the implication that the pool water in a saltwater pool is as salty as the sea, these pools don’t feel or taste much saltier than regular water.  In fact, saltwater pools have just 1/10th to 1/12th the salinity of the ocean.  This low level of salt makes the pool water far less irritating and damaging to skin, eyes, and hair; it also means it’s safe for swimmers to open their eyes underwater. Low but effective levels of chlorine in the pool water keep the pool clean without the chlorine smell. Water in these types of pools also feels softer and less abrasive than traditionally chlorinated water due to the softening effect that occurs when the salt is used to create chlorine.

How Does a Salt Chlorinating System Work?

When using a saltwater chlorinating system, the pool creates its own chlorine through electrolysis, where salt in the chlorine generator is converted to chlorine and introduced to the pool when the pump is running. Chlorine generated by a saltwater chlorinating system is milder than chemically produced, more concentrated chlorine that’s added into traditional pools. The initial investment of a saltwater chlorinating system is costlier than a traditional system, but over time it will result in less money spent on chemicals and less time spent on maintenance. It should be noted that the chlorine generating cell will need to be cleaned every 1 to 3 months to maintain proper function.

Spend less time maintaining and more time enjoying your pool

Once the saltwater system is in place, there’s no need to manually add chlorine to your pool water, which makes saltwater pool maintenance less time and labor intensive than a traditional pool. A saltwater chlorinating system works for many types of pools, so whether you have a large in-ground pool or a smaller above-ground pool or hot tub, you can enjoy all of the benefits that saltwater pools have to offer!
